Sex Education, or is it Sexy Education?

Updated: May 10, 2020

I thought about potentially carrying on talking about the American Pie series, but then I realised that after the first film they are no longer teens, and thus to me a little bit irrelevant. So, I thought we would hop across the pond, grab a cup of tea and look at Netflix's famous show Sex Education (2019-). You may already know this show from the famous meme below:

Which couldn't be more relevant to this pandemic even if they time travelled and predicted it. However, I am not here to talk about washing your hands, which you should do. I am here to talk about teen representation and sex. So, in this we have Otis (Asa Butterfield) who is a sexually nervous and awkward teen whose mother is a sex therapist (because that's not totally scarring) and the narrative shows how teens' lives are interrupted by their sexual issues and discrepancies. Instead of maybe asking a friend for help, or even a parent/guardian, they decide to go to Otis, who, with help from his friend Maeve (Emma Mackey) set up an 'off-licence' sex therapy business. Now I could go on talking about the plot but instead I will just tell you what I think about it. Firstly, running a sex clinic, as funny as it sounds, I really hope no one out there has decided that just because they are related to sex therapists that they should become one! However, talking about issues commonly seen amongst teens like: naked photos being leaked, nerves about intercourse and coming out to your family, are something that generally should be discussed.

As for representation; firstly, a round of applause, we have a BRITISH cast, in a BRITISH plot. I am personally, so happy that for once it's not all American, although there are some American tendencies (wearing normal clothes to school, jock jackets etc etc). I am extremely happy that as a British woman I honestly think that I would be represented in this. I know that this isn't a film, it's a TV show, however, all teen programming should be considered.

I rate this 5/5 hand washes.

Now streaming seasons 1+2 on Netflix.
