The Sexual Health MOT.

Updated: May 28, 2020

From STIs, to discussing fetishes and graphic STI tests. Channel 4 brings us The Sex Clinic (2019-); a reality show telling us what goes on behind the scenes of sexual health screenings. Now, I am fully aware that this is not a teen tv show or film, however, this show is incredibly useful at showing teens (sometimes over 20s) getting STI tests and asking questions that maybe you are too afraid to ask.

Dr Naomi Sutton (pictured on the right) is a member of the Outspoken Advisory Board. Leah Jewett, Director of Outspoken, describes Dr Naomi as being 'impressed by her warmth, openness and willingness to communicate' (Leah Jewett, 2020) and this is definitely what I see when watching this show. The Sex Clinic team are kind and this show encourages safe sex as well as encouraging regular STI tests.

'The Sex Clinic is colourful, upfront, enlightening and honest, entertaining yet unsensational. Although some of what the participants say can land in a slightly shocking or off-putting way, their desire to open up and be honest is inspiring. The medical experts who treat them are both matter of fact and compassionate' (Leah Jewett, 2020).

This TV show is so refreshing, it's nice to see doctors and medical professionals discussing open relationships and giving advice on 'taboo' topics, nothing is off limits for this team, which is exactly the way it should be. 'Accuracy, honesty and transparency are vital' (Leah Jewett, 2020); this honesty, as Jewett describes is vital because what teen programming don't discuss or don't show because it's too 'taboo' is exactly where The Sex Clinic fills in the gaps. Now, I'm not recommending you watch this with your parents, but definitely watch at least one episode, you will be hooked, and hopefully you will book a sexual health MOT, IT'S IMPORTANT TO GET TESTED PEOPLE.

I rate this 5/5 STI tests.
